The man in the view is Henry Stegman, holding Giant Sequoia foliage, prophetic of his future occupation in Yosemite Valley as proprietor of Stegman & Son, opposite the Cosmopolitan Saloon. Henry Stegman was the operator of a corral in Yosemite Valley from 1874 through 1889. He was also the valley postmaster between 1879 and 1886. Henry and wife Sally Ann lived briefly at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, but Sally Ann became homesick and returned to Yosemite.
