Crystal Palace Storm Damage 1861

On the night of Feb. 21, 1861, there was a severe gale which destroyed the North Wing of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham along with causing significant damage throughout the area. A rare set of stereoveiws was produced, possibly by the firm of Negretti and Zambra, of the aftermath. One of these photojournalistic images was reproduced on the cover of The Illustrated London News for Saturday, March 2, 1861. Here is the news story as reported in that issue, along with the six stereoviews in my collection. The image is shown on the bottom of the cover page and the story of the disaster is presented on page 194 of the issue. The newspaper engraving appears to have been based on 44521 below.
