1741. “Wahwonah”-or Big Tree Point.
1751. A Felled Tree-78 feet circumference-from which a section has been taken for exhibition. The man in the view is Henry Stegman, holding Giant Sequoia foliage, prophetic of his future occupation in Yosemite Valley as proprietor of Stegman & Son, opposite the Cosmopolitan Saloon. Henry Stegman was the operator of a corral in Yosemite Valley from 1874 through 1889. He was also the valley postmaster between 1879 and 1886. Henry and wife Sally Ann lived briefly at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, but Sally Ann became homesick and returned to Yosemite. Stegman followed her back, and they made their home in the valley thereafter.

Hiram W. Phillips, Submarine Diver. Hiram was born in Braintree, Massachusetts in 1850 and died in 1924 in a diving accident. His diving career covered 55 years during which time he engaged in salvage, underwater construction of sea walls and foundations, and in his later years the laying of underwater sewer pipe. He was responsible for a number of improvements to diving apparatus and underwater construction methods, some of which were patented and some of which were given to the industry without patents. He had three daughters, was a member of the Quincy City Council and the Lodge of Masons, gave lectures to the public about his diving career, and wrote poetry.
